No one can predict when the storms of life are coming. When it comes suddenly without warning and beyond our imagination or ability to handle. Like the flood in Saguenay, Quebec in July 1996. It was the biggest overland flood in 20th century Canadian History.
In our lives the question is not if the floods will come, but when. Sometimes we have advance notice, but usually not. Jesus stresses a strong concrete foundation for such times – one built by not just hearing His words but also by living out the scripture said “ As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” (Luke 6:47-49) When we practice it is like pouring concrete into our lives. When the floods come, and they will withstand them because we’ve been “well built”. The absence of practice leaves our lives vulnerable to collapse and destruction. It’s good advice to inspect the foundation occasionally and do an assessment. Jesus will help us to strengthen the weak places that we might stand strong in His power when the floods come.
Jesus, help me to be a doer, not just a hearer. Give me the vision to see weak places in my foundation that need attention.
