When I was young I liked to hear ghost stories, particularly from the local radio station at 11 pm every night. Some stories were true and some fictitious, I was so scared of darkness yet it
gave me excitement and nightmare. Later I read a book, which explained people were scared
of darkness because they injected unhealthy thoughts into their mind.
However, in (Joshua 1:9) “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
In Joshua 1, we read of the transition of leadership to Joshua after Moses died. The command to “be strong and courageous” was repeated several times to Joshua and the Israelites to emphasize its importance. Surely, we also feel trepidation as we face an uncertain future, but God reassuringly said, (Joshua 1:5) “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
It’s natural to have fears, but it’s detrimental to our physical and spiritual health to live in a state of constant fear. Just as God encouraged His servants, we too can be strong and courageous because of the One who promises to always be with us.
