It seems strange that we speak or talk to ourselves. But actually, we do this subconsciously when we are in a desperate situation or in a kind of struggle or extreme danger. Once I woke up in a dream, not a nightmare; but I was on an escape mode trying to flee from something dangerous. I found my right arm was totally numb for 5 seconds and I was so scared. I said to God “help me, help me”. And at the same time, I rubbed my right arm furiously with my left arm and top of my hand. In a few moments, the circulation of the blood flowed normally and my right arm was back to normal again. I do believe when we are in some desperate situation we tend to speak to ourselves and wake us up again.
I read an article about a woman who lifted up a car in order to rescue her son below a wheel. There is a hidden potential power for us to use in case of emergency. Also in the bible, we have similar stories about beating Israel’s enemies in a battle, Deborah, a judge, revealed that she too had spoken to her heart during battle. “March on, my soul,” she told it, “Be strong!” (Judges 5:21), because the Lord had promised victory (4:6–7). So when fear, depression, or condemnation come, perhaps we too should address our souls and say: March on! Be strong! You feeble heart, beat again.
