When I visited a new country or a new place, one of my first experiences left me an awkward feeling. Perhaps the way we dressed, the customs, and the language spoken etc. Things we did were totally out of place. Since I was a visitor I tried to learn, accommodate and fit in the best I could. That way I would fit in as soon as and as much as possible to avoid awkward manners and situations.
Apparently some of these cultural practices carried on through the ages. Later, I reflected on how God instructed the Israelites to welcome foreigners, in contrast to cultural differences such as I encountered. In setting out the laws that would allow His people to flourish, God reminded them to welcome foreigners because they themselves were once foreigners (Leviticus 19:33-34) “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”
God had rescued the Israelites from oppression in Egypt, giving them a home in a land “flowing with milk and honey.” He expected His people to love others who also made their home there.
As you encounter strangers in your midst, ask God to reveal any cultural practices that might keep you from sharing His love with them.
