August 26 Spiritual Driving-Ephesians 5:8-20

I don’t exactly remember how my driving instructor taught me driving a car. But he said first to adjust your seat, then the side rear mirrors and choose the correct position of the gear selector. While driving check right, left and rear mirrors, signal left or right turns and turn your heads to check blind spots before making turns safely. Also checking the right, left and rear  mirrors to make sure driving conditions are safe. The idea is to avoid car accidents.

We may wonder how that idea might translate to our spiritual lives. In Ephesians 5, Paul told Ephesian believers, (Ephesians 5:15) “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise, but as wise.”  Paul knew certain hazards could derail the Ephesians—old ways of living at odds with their new life in Jesus (Ephesians 5: 8, 10–11) “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the LORD. Live as children of light, and find out what pleases the LORD. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” So he instructed the growing church to pay attention.

Notice hazards, and avoid personal pitfalls like drunkenness and wild living (Ephesians 5: 18) “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” No matter what hazards we face—and even when we stumble—we can experience our new life in Christ as we grow in dependence on His unlimited power and grace.
