June 23 Underestimating Ourselves-1 Samuel 15:10-18

Many people look themselves as small mentally or physically. There are fairly complex factors that contribute to one’s self-images in psychology. These factors may include his family background, parental education and environmental conditions, how he was brought up etc. As we heard people say “monkey see monkey do”. We intrinsically copy everything from our environment, parents and people around us. This copying is not necessarily beneficial to us. Luckily, many of these factors can be modified as we have the will to change for the better or under someone’s constructive influence. Yet sometimes it is not easy at all to overcome our exterior conditions, but one can go around the obstacles and perseverance to pursue one’s dream. If one puts in a great effort and that good result can be expected in good terms.

But in the sample of Saul was “small in his own mental image” as physically he was ahead and shoulders above the rest. In fact, his actions in the chapter show him trying to win the approval of others. He hadn’t fully grasped that God—not people—had chosen him and given him a mission. For Saul’s mistake is a picture of many people’s failure: we miss that we were made in God’s image to reflect His rule, and we miss the point of being great. To undo this, we need to return to God: to let the Father to guide us by His love and to do good for His sake and mission.
